Cloud computing 'creating new IT positions'

Jan 8 2012, 17:14 PM

Cloud computing will create a number of new roles as companies need someone with a good knowledge of the technology to monitor their shift to the cloud.

Speaking to Computer World, Al Delattre, global industry lead for technology at recruiting firm Korn/Ferry International, said that a growing number of 'director of cloud transformation' roles will become available in the coming year.

"This position is like being a conductor of an orchestra. It's a series of 500 projects over seven years. You have to make sure it works and it's sequenced," he said.

Mr Delattre added that no one will have all the skills required to oversee the whole transition to the cloud, so multiple people need to be involved, which is why  someone needs to be hired to manage the process.

He added that this role is not likely to be temporary, as even when the company has moved to the cloud, there will be numerous changes and developments to deal with over the coming years, meaning it will morph into a maintenance role.

A study by TechTarget recently highlighted that a quarter of companies are planning to increase cloud investment.
