Cloud computing server market to double between 2010 and 2012
Jan 17 2012, 21:44 PM
The popularity of cloud computing has surged in recent years and the cloud server market will be worth double what it was two years ago by the end of 2012, it has been claimed.
According to research by HIS iSuppli, shipments of cloud servers will reach 875,000 units this year, up 35 per cent compared to last year and double the 460,000 shipped in 2010.
This growth is expected to continue for the foreseeable future, with shipments expected to grow by between 23 and 30 per cent annually until 2015.
Commenting on this growth, Peter Lin, senior analyst for compute platforms at IHS said that the cloud comes with multiple benefits.
“For the enterprise in particular, the cloud can be deployed as software, platform or infrastructure to help keep information technology costs down. The benefits are many, including higher utilization of server devices, low capital expenditure for clients, high scalability and access to the service across multiple devices," he added.
Writing for Computing World, Microsoft New Zealand managing director Paul Muckleston said that 2012 will be the year that cloud computing matures.
