Cloud computing 'useful for religious organisation'
Oct 20 2010, 14:03 PM
A representative from the Seventh Day Adventist Church has described how the move to cloud computing has offered "huge savings".
Information Systems Manager at the South Pacific arm of the organisation Luke Pannekoek told CIO that it now uses 70 virtualised servers and the change has added a "new dimension" to operations, as well as producing significant savings.
The institution used to need 15 physical servers, but this number has been cut down to six with the aid of cloud computing.
Mr Pannekoek claimed that the structure of the church is also unique, with different entities being involved.
He was quoted as saying: "There is a lot of exchange of information [from] the way we manage our membership records rolling right down into how we manage events."
Recently, the significance of cloud computing was highlighted after a company called Mango was hit by an earthquake in Christchurch, as the organisation was able to continue operations thanks to most of its data being held off-site.
