New Zealand ecommerce, growing faster than expected

Aug 4 2011, 23:58 PM

Ecommerce in New Zealand could be growing at a faster rate than previously expected due to purchases made from overseas websites.

According to the Retailers Association, there is no reason why the high online spending levels recorded in Australia cannot be replicated in New Zealand.

Commenting on figures from PricewaterhouseCoopers and Frost Sullivan, which showed that retail spending would double in Australia this year, the association's chief executive John Albertson told Stuff.co.nz: "I expect it would be very similar. I don't think there is anything to suggest we are ahead of, or behind, the Australian consumer."

Ultimately, Mr Albertson said it would be good if New Zealand-based online retailers saw a 2.5 per cent increase in online spending this year.

It has been suggested that the strong dollar has been encouraging people to shop on overseas websites. In order to boost domestic spending, businesses could try using a direct mail campaign to reach customers.

Earlier this week, FiftyOne Global Ecommerce claimed that Australia is a nation of power shoppers ranking only behind Canada in terms of online retail.
