New Zealand 'to be targeted by more sophisticated cyber crime'

Good data management and data security has never been more important, with experts predicting that 2012 will see businesses targeted by increasingly sophisticated cyber criminals.
According to Rob Forsyth, managing director at Sophos Australia and New Zealand, the nature of cyber crime is changing, with "hacktivists" – hackers who break into security systems to promote a certain cause – becoming less prevalent and organised criminals becoming more of an issue.
"We saw a lot of hacktivists last year, who were by their very nature protesting something," he told SmartCompany.
"But I think we're going to see an evolution this year, which will see organised crime get a lot more prominence."
He suggested that this will mean a rise in broadly targeted theft, meaning companies need to be alert.
In recent years, large businesses have become very adept at protecting their data from criminals and now small companies must do the same or risk becoming the new target.
"It's time for SMEs to pull up their socks and see what they can do to protect themselves," Mr Forsyth added.
Mark Dampster, associate of the Centre for Cyber Security, recently said that the sheer amount of data companies deal with means security should be at the heart of all businesses' operations.
